In the mid-twentieth 100 years, the country of South Africa was dominated by policy of apartheid, a separation and segregation based upon race. " Master Harold" …and the boys, authored by Athol Fugard is a semiautobiographical drama which portrays what are the results in a contemporary society composed of institutional anger between whites and blacks.

Master Harold, otherwise referred to as Hally, is a 17 yr old son of the wealthy light couple who have St . George's Park Tea Room. The play is placed in Interface Elizabeth, S. africa in the 50s. Hally wanders into the stylish tea place one stormy day to look for its two black staff, Sam and Willie, rehearsing for an upcoming ballroom dance competition.

Sam and Willie have been Hally's second relatives since having been an infant. Sam, the more mature and wiser of the two, acted like a surrogate father to Hally. He fortified the kid's sense of well-being, when simultaneously instructing him a series of life lessons. Sam utilized these for you to teach Hally a way to escape racism, and bridge the gap among whites and blacks. All three men become old close friends should, find out certain boundaries between appropriateness and wrongdoing but continuously discover new ones.

Many of Hally's favorite childhood memories included both Mike and Willie. One particular memory space involved Sam constructing a kite pertaining to Hally. Though this served as a metaphor for pleasure and flexibility, it also acted as an omen pertaining to racial divide. Strict plans of apartheid prohibited and governed this sort of issues because land control, intermarriage, and use of open public facilities. Hally was sitting on a " whites only" bench as he was flying the kite, so Sam was not in order to sit down with him to look at it explode.
